What Really Happens to You When You Die.

When we die, the time for action has finished.

From death onwards, it is only the abode of recompense.

We are not able to perceive the affairs that come after this life – the only way we have to understand them are by reports from the trustworthy messengers.

Those whom The Creator, The All Knower of the unseen and the seen, sent to inform us of the most important of affairs that we might prepare for our death.

What follows, then it is truth from The Lord of The Worlds.

What Really Happens to You When You Die?

In The Name of God, The Most Merciful, The Ever-Merciful to His believing servants.

All praise belongs to God, may He extol His Messenger in the highest company of the Angels and grant him peace, his family and companions and whoever follows guidance until the Day of Judgement.

To proceed,

The companion of God’s Messenger, al Bara’, reported that the Messenger of God, Muhammad, may God extol him his in the highest company of the Angels and grant him peace, said,

“Verily, the believing servant, when leaving this life and journeying to the Hereafter, angels will descend upon him, their faces will be as white as if they were suns, they will have with them a shroud from the shroud of Paradise and an embalmment from the embalmments of heaven.

Then they will sit within eye-shot of him.

Then the angel of death (peace be upon him) will come and sit at his head and say,

‘O you virtuous soul; come out to forgiveness and pleasure from you Lord.’

So it will come out as a drop comes out from the mouth of a jug, then he will take it, not leaving it in his hand for longer than the blink of an eye until they have placed it in that shroud and that embalmment.

There will emanate from it a smell like that of the most sweet smelling musk of the face of the earth.

Then they will ascend with it, and they shall not pass with it by any group of the angels but they will say,

‘Who is this good and sweet-smelling soul?’

Then they shall say to them,

“Such and such, son of such and such” – choosing the best of the names he used to be called in this life.

Until they reach the lowest sky, then they shall ask permissions to enter and they shall be granted entry until they end at the seventh heaven, then God, Exalted and High, shall say,

‘Write the book of my servant in `Illiyeen’

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ

“And what will inform you (O Muḥammad) what is ʿIlliyyūn?

كِتَٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ

A register fully inscribed to which bear witness those nearest to God”

The Noble Qur’an 83:19-21

And his book will be written in `Illiyeen, and it shall be said,

‘Return him to The Earth, for I have created them from it, and into it I shall return them, and from it I shall extract them a second time’.

So his soul is returned to his body. And he will hear the footsteps of his friends who buried him when they leave him.

The Questioning of The Grave

Then two severe angels shall come and terrify him and sit him up next to them and will ask him:

“Who is your Lord?”

He will reply,

“My Lord is God.”

Then they shall ask him,

“What is your religion?”

He will answer them,

“My religion is Islam (submission to God alone upon true monotheism, turning away from polytheism and its people – the religion of all the prophets and messengers)”

Then they shall say,

“Who is this man who was sent among you?”

He will reply,

“He is The Messenger of God (may God extol him in the highest company of the Angels and bestow peace upon him)”

Then they shall say,

“What have you done?”

He shall reply,

“I read The Book of God (The Qur’an), then I believed in it and accepted it.”

Then a caller will call from the sky,

‘My slave has spoken the truth, so spread out for him from the heaven and clothe him from the heaven, and open a door for him from the heaven,’

So its goodness and its smell will come to him, then his grave will be expanded for him as fas as he can see.

Then a man will come to him. His face will be handsome, and his clothes will be handsome, and his smell will be sweet.

Then he shall say unto him,

‘I bring you glad tidings of that which will make you happy, this is the day that you were promised.’

Then he will say,

‘And may God give you a glad tiding. Who are you, for your face is the face of someone who comes with good news?”

He shall reply,

‘I am your good deeds, by God, I did not know of you but that you were quick to the obedience of God and slow to His disobedience, so may God reward you with good.’

Then he will say,

‘My Lord bring the hour so that I might return to my family and my wealth,’

It will be said to him,

‘Be tranquil,’

The Wicked Soul

[And the disbelieving/transgressing/wicked servant] leaving this life and journeying to the hereafter then angels will descend upon him, their faces will be black, they have with them a coarse woollen fabric made of fire.

Then they will sit within eyeshot of him.

Then the angel of death will come and sit at his head and will say,

‘O you wicked soul, come out to an anger from you Lord and a fury (from Him).

So it (his soul) will be distributed throughout his body, then it will be ripped away as a thorny branch is ripped out of damp cotton [and in its way out it will tear and cut the nerves and blood vessels] and he will be cursed by all the angels between the sky and by all the angels in the sky, and the gates of heaven are closed.

There is no gate in the heaven but its people supplicate that the wicked soul shall not be ascended to their side.

Then he will take it, not leaving it in his hand for longer than a blink of an eye until they have placed it in that sackcloth.

And there will emanate from it a stench like that of the most evil-smelling corpse on the face of the earth.

Then they shall ascend with it, and they shall not pass with it a group of angels but they will say,

‘What is this evil soul?’

Then they shall say, ‘Such and Such son of such and such’, choosing the most hated names he used to be called in this life.

Until they reach the lowest heaven then they shall ask permission to enter and they shall not be granted entry.

Then the Messenger of God (may God extol him and grant him peace) recited,

“The Doors of the sky are not opened to them, nor shall they enter the heaven until the camel passes through the eye of the needle.”

The Noble Qur’an 7:40

Then God, Exalted and High, shall say,

‘Write the book of my servant in Sijjeen in the lowest earth.’

Then it will be said,

‘Return my slave to the earth, for I promised them I have created them from it, and into it I shall return them and from it I shall extract them a second time,’

Then his soul shall be taken away from the sky with a mighty hurl until it is cast into his body.

Then he (The Prophet, may God extol him in the highest company of the Angels and grant him pace) recited,

“And those who associate partners with God (in worship), they are as one who falls from the sky then is snatched by the birds or is cast by the wind into a very low place”

The Noble Qur’an 22:31

Then his soul will be returned into his body. Verily he will hear the footsteps of his friends who buried him when they leave him.

Then two harsh severe and fearsome angels shall come to him and terrify him and sit him up and ask him,

“Who is your Lord?”

He shall reply,

“Huh? Huh? I don’t know,”

Then they shall say to him,

“What is your religion?”

He shall answer,

“Huh? Huh? I don’t know”

Then they shall ask him,

“Who is this man who was sent among you?”

He will reply,

“Huh? Huh? I don’t know, I heard the people say something so I said it,”

And then it will be said to him,

“Don’t ever know and don’t ever recite!”

Then a caller will call from the sky,

“My slave has spoken falsely, so spread out for him from the hell-fire, and open a door for him from the hell-fire,”

So its heat and hot wind will come unto him, then his grave will be contracted upon him until his limbs are caught up among one another.

Then a man will come to him. His face will be ugly, his clothes will be ugly and his smell will be vile.

Then he shall say unto him,

“I bring you tidings of that which will harm you. This is the day you were promised.”

Then he will say,

“And you, may God give you bad tiding. Who are you, for your face is the face of someone who comes with evil?”

He shall reply,

“I am your evil deeds, by God, I did not know you but that you were quick to the disobedience to God and slow to His obedience, so may God reward you with bad,”

And then will be assigned to him a blind, deaf and mute person who holds in his hand a hammer, if a mountain is hit with it, it would disintegrate, and he will beat him with it until he becomes dust and then God will render him to his initial form.

And he will beat him again and he (the wicked one) will cry of sorrow and pain a cry that will be heard by all the creatures except humans and jinn.

And a door of hell will be opened unto him within his grave and will spread out for him sheets of hellfire.

Then he shall say,

“My Lord do not bring the hour.”

This report is narrated by Ahmed, Abu Dawood, Ibn Majah, At-Tayalisi and al-Hakim who said it is to the standards of Bukhari and Muslim. This text is from a variety of the different narrations.

Who Will Receive The Bliss of The Grave?

God, The Most High, has said in The Qur’an,

“God will keep firm those who believe, with the word that stands firm in this world, and in the Hereafter. And God will cause to go astray those who are wrongdoers, and God does what He wills.”

The Noble Qur’an 14:27

So for the one who desires the bliss and pleasure of the grave then let him believe in his Lord, The Most High and take a way of obedience to Him,

And that is to believe in His Names and Attributes, His Actions and His sole Right to all worship.

Just as He is the only Creator, Sustainer, Provider – He is the only one deserving of worship.

So single out your Lord in all worship and bear witness to the truthfulness of all His messengers that you may receive mercy!

I ask God, The Perfect and Most High, to guide you to obedience to Him and make you of those who have submitted to Him and that he makes you of those who are granted what is best in this life and the next.

May God extol His Messenger in the highest company of the Angels and grant him peace, his family and companions altogether.
